On Saturday, March 2nd, ICS competed in the Region 19 Odyssey of the Mind Tournament at Wellsville Secondary School. As I watched the team’s dress rehearsal, I felt very confident the team had solved the problem effectively and with style. I didn’t know what competition had in store for this young team of 5th and 6th graders, but I felt they were going to leave a lasting impression on the judges. Odyssey of the Mind, for individuals who are unfamiliar with the creative problem solving competition, is a precursor to the STREAM initiative. Seven member teams are charged with writing a script, building props, and creating costumes to support the spirit of the problem. The solution to the problem must be delivered in under eight minutes.
Amazingly enough, our team crafted a solution and managed to WOW the judges with their hydraulic press robotic, controlled by pressing different colored liquids through syringes for movement. The team earned the highest creativity award, The Ranatra Fusca, which hasn’t been awarded in Region 19 in 16 years. Congratulations to the team and their coaches, Kelly and Steve Smith and Megan Freeman.
The team advances to the State Competition in Birmingham on March 23rd.
